Recently, I’ve heard from two art galleries that carry my artwork that they are closing… This is such sad news; for me, the gallery owner, and all the other artists who have entrusted their works to the gallery owners for potential sales.
I have humbly shared this foreboding information with other artists and gallery/store owners since hearing this news. It appears that misery loves company. You see their faces show signs of relief when hearing of my misfortune and other gallery owners “going out of business” stories. It’s like you see them thinking, It’s not just me. I’m not the only business owner feeling like a failure and struggling to stay open. There’s an immediate comraderie amongst us. Conversations are lighter, easier, almost humorous.
By openly sharing our hardships we can relieve internal anxieties that are built on actions beyond our control. We can feel a connectedness with each other which is always a good thing.
I just hope that when artists and galleries start re-building that we will see the same relief on each others’ faces and believe that success loves company too; and hopefully, we will reach out to each other, help our creative friends and business partners to move forward once again, and to believe in our mutual successes.
In the mean time, I refuse to let my own disappointments effect my personal drive to create more art. What are your plans?
